ENGINEERING GUIDE

Start with the question the analysis must answer

A CAD file describes geometry. A useful finite element analysis also needs a description of loading, materials, connections and the conditions in which the structure operates. Before sending files, explain the decision you want the analysis to support.

Prepare the input data

  • Objective: describe the component and the issue to assess, such as deflection, strength, a connection or fatigue life.
  • Geometry: identify the current drawing and CAD revisions, relevant thicknesses, tolerances and design variants.
  • Materials: specify the grades, condition and available properties relevant to operating temperature and loading.
  • Loads: provide magnitudes, directions, application points and combinations that can occur together.
  • Supports and connections: describe bolts, welds, contact, clearances and the movements that are physically possible.
  • Assessment criteria: identify the required performance, reference documents and expected reporting scope.

If loads are uncertain

Describe the operating cycle and list the information you have. Separate measured values from estimates. Discuss whether additional measurements or an agreed sensitivity study are needed before treating an assumed load as a design input.

Review results in the context of the model

Ask which quantities were checked, how the mesh affects them and how the supports and loads were represented. More elements do not by themselves establish accuracy. Stress peaks near idealised sharp corners or point loads need careful interpretation.

Where test data are available, compare the same physical quantities at corresponding locations and under matching conditions. The report should distinguish observations, assumptions and conclusions.

Common questions

Is a STEP file enough to request a quotation?

It is a useful starting point. Add a short explanation of the purpose, operating conditions and available load information so the scope can be discussed.

Can simulation replace testing?

The required combination of calculation and testing depends on the product, the assessment objective and the applicable requirements. Agree on this before starting the work.

Can I discuss the task before sharing confidential files?

Yes. Begin with a general description and arrange an NDA before providing sensitive documentation.
