MEASUREMENTS THAT SUPPORT ENGINEERING DECISIONS.

Understand how your structure behaves under load

Strain gauges record local surface strain during testing or operation. KOMES plans the measurement, selects and installs the gauges, records the signals and interprets the results for the agreed engineering objective.

Applications

Measurements can support load testing, assessment of operating loads, comparison of design variants and validation of a finite element model. Typical objects include frames, machinery, load-bearing structures, vehicle components and structural connections.

A measurement plan matched to the task

We agree on the locations and orientations of the gauges, the expected strain range, the loading programme and environmental conditions. Gauge type and bridge configuration depend on the strain directions, material, temperature and required compensation.

Surface preparation, bonding, protection and cable routing are part of the installation. Before recording, we check the measurement chain and its response. Temperature effects and other sources of uncertainty must be considered when interpreting the signals.

From strain to engineering assessment

Stress is derived from strain using the relevant material properties and assumptions about the stress state. We explain these assumptions rather than treating a strain reading as a direct stress measurement.

Where required, strain can be recorded alongside quantities such as force, pressure, temperature, displacement or vibration. Matching measurements to the corresponding points and conditions in an FEA model helps assess its representation of the real structure.

Results and reporting

  • Measurement locations and system configuration.
  • Recorded time histories and relevant characteristic values.
  • Comparison of loading conditions or agreed design variants.
  • Interpretation, uncertainties and limitations relevant to the task.
